Why developing a Personal Brand is a must for every Freelancer

Personal Brnading

Personal Branding

Do you know what Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, President Barak Obama have in common? Well they wear the same outfit everyday. If you notice carefully you will see Steve Jobs wearing the same tee and jeans everyday and to almost every place. There are two reasons for this.

Number 1 is that they do not want to spend time every day to decide what to wear. Number 2 is that they are silently building their personal brand.

Do not think that personal branding is only about wearing the same clothes everyday or eating the same food. It is much more than that.  Building a personal brand takes time and work. You as a freelancer should always aim to build your personal brand since it will be one of the cornerstones of your success in life.

If you are a graphic designer and you have your own style of illustration or say packaging design then people will name that style of art after you. That is exactly what happened with Disney. We call a particular style of illustration “Disney style”.

14 ways to improve your home office for better productivity

home office workspace of a freelancer

Freelancer workspace

I am writing this post sitting at my home office. Most freelancers work from their home office. Let me tell you that ambience of your workspace plays a very vital role in crafting a superb piece of content. I am telling you this from my experience. So let me go ahead and describe my workspace to you.

I am working on my desktop computer which has a 27 inch  LED display. A soft instrumental piece of saxophone played by the maestro Kenny G is playing in my media player. The speakers attached to my desktop computer are Creative GigaWorks T40 Series II 2.0 which are pretty decent. It is only yesterday that I organized my workspace and it is looking neat and tidy now. I have bought myself a cord organizer from amazon which I used to organize my workspace.

Then I have this beautiful Paddywax Fragrance Diffuser Set (again bought from amazon) giving out a beautiful and intoxicating fragrance. My air conditioner is set to a balmy 24 deg C or 75deg F which is neither warm not very cold. Sunlight is coming into my room through the glass panes of my window and it is a beautiful sunny day. To me this is my perfect workspace. Now do you think that there is any reason why this workspace will not get the best out of me?

So now let me share a few things which I learned through experience. These tips will help you redesign your workspace and get the best productivity out of you.

You may form some fictitious client names in your mind say Fine Dine Restaurant or Jenny’s hair dressing and build website designs on their lines of business. Also remember to write a brief description of the business for whom you are building the website design.

How to define the requirements of a coding project

finalizing scope of work of coding projects

Finalize requirements or scope of work

Well in your freelancing career as a coder or programmer you shall find many clients who will ask for a quotation for the job at hand. Many times you shall have to make a quotation for a freelance job spending hours together with no guarantee that you shall win the freelance contract. But the truth my dear friend you shall still have to give out quotations since if you don’t many others would do it and steal the contract away from you!

Sometimes in your freelancing career you will understand that some people ask for quotation to get the “best deal”. In the bargain you loose out on your precious time with no guarantee that you shall get the freelance work in question. Still if you refuse to give out a free quote you stand no chance to win the freelance job! So quotations are necessary evils that will stay in the system and you have to deal with it.

For building a good quotation you need to first look at the fact whether all the requirements are well defined by the client or not. In my freelancing career I have found that most clients are themselves not sure about their project. They do not have a well defined scope of work ready with them. Refrain from bidding on such projects in the first place. Tell the client that if the requirements are not well defined then you can’t bid on it. Offer to work with the client so that you can get an exact scope of work which will enable you to offer and estimate or quotation for the freelance job. You can guide the client in the process.

The steps for arriving at an intelligent and almost accurate estimate for the freelance work are outlined below. The reason why I say almost accurate is because requirements do mostly change during the course of the job. We shall discuss ways to handle that as well.

You can get it designed by a designer or you might consider hiring a graphic designer under you to do the same for you. But then you shall have to make the design work and make it into HTML and CSS form. For this you need to pick up HTML and CSS. If you are making a static website that does not interact with the user then you need not use any server side scripting language. Only HTML and CSS would suffice.

There are several good resources on the internet from where you can learn HTML and CSS. The World Wide Web Consorticum at http://www.w3schools.com/ is a perfect place to start.
